Here are some grass species you may consider as ornamental and for landscaping.

1.) Pampa Grass (Cortaderia selloana)

Pampa Grass is a tall grass native to southern South America and Patagonia. It can grow up to 3 meters in height and its evergreen leaves have very sharp edges so they should be handled with care. This grass bears flowers in a dense white panicle about 40 cm or 16 inches in length.

The feathery flower head plumes, when dried, are widely used in flower arrangements and other ornamental displays.

2.) Buffalo Grass

Buffallo Grass or Bouteloua dactyloides is a prairie grass endemic to North America. This short grass, which is grown as an ornamental plant, can be found on high plains. It is also used as a drought-tolerant turgrass in North America and is also grown for forage.

3.) Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus)

The Black Mondo Grass is a small ground cover evergreen perennial. It is endemic to Japan and Korea and grows on open and forested slopes. It grows from short rhizomes, and bears tufts of leaves, from which flowers emerge in racemes held on short stems above the leaves. The plant is characterized by its leaves that turn from green to dark purple (black) and can grow to 8 inches and 1/4 inch wide. Black Nondo Grass is usually used in rock gardens or raised beds as an ornamental plant. This plant has no insect or disease problems. It is also known as Ebony Knight or Nigrescens.

Zoysia Grass is a creeping grass endemic to Southeast and East Asia. It is usually found in coastal areas or grasslands.

5.) Fountain Grass (Pennisetum setaceum)

The Fountain Grass is a perennial bunch grass that is endemic to East Africa tropical Africa, Southwest Asia and the Middle East. It grows on open, scrubby habitats. This grass has been introduced to many parts of the world as an ornamental plant. The plant is drought-tolerant and grows fast. It can grow up to 1 meter in height and has many purple, plumose flower spikes.

The Japanese Pampa Grass or Miscanthus sinensis is known for a variety of common names such as Chinese Silver Grass, Eulalia Grass, Maiden Grass, Porcupine Grass, Suzuki Grass and Zebra Grass. This grass species which is also grown as an ornamental plant is endemic to eastern Asia – China, Japan and Korea.

7.) Monkey Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus)

Monkey Grass ("dragon's beard") or Ja-no-hige ("snake's beard")) is a grass species endemic to Japan. It is grown as an ornamental plant and provides an excellent ground cover. It is often sold as a decorative plant for freshwater aquaria and may flourish for a few months and then die. This grass is also used for hacking dry coughs, dry tongue and mouth and constipation. It is also commonly known as Mondo Grass and Fountain Plant.

Lilyturf or Liriope muscari is a grass species from East Asia. It is also known for a variety of common names like Big Blue Lilyturf, Border Grass and Monkey Grass. It is used in mass planting as a ground cover and landscape uses include borders. It is an easy plant to grow and minimal maintenance is required.

The Tufted Hair-grass or Deschampsia cespitosa is a grass widely distributed in the North and South America and Eurasia. It is also commonly known as or Tussock Grass.

10.) Deer Grass

The Deer Grass or Muhlenbergia rigens is a warm season perennial bunchgrass used as an ornamental plant. It can be found in sandy or well drained soils below 7000 feet in elevation in the Southwestern United States and parts of Mexico.

11.) Emerald Zoysia

Emerald Zoysia is a unique grass with a thin bladed leaf that forms a very lush lawn. It shares the drought and shade resistance of the other varieties. This grass has as fine, soft texture and can be left unmowed as it only grows to a height of up to 30 cm.

The Slender Meadow Foxtail or Alopecurus myosuroides is an annual grass that can be found on cultivated and waste land. It is also known as Black-Grass, Twitch Grass and Black Twitch. The leaves are hairless. Leaf sheath is smooth which is green to purplish in color. It flowers from May to August.
